Othello Role: Desdemona Toured: 2009 Director: Kathryn Hunter Company: RSC Synopsis: Othello is an African general working for the Venetian State. When he and Desdemona, a senator's daughter, fall in love, they marry secretly knowing their union will not be approved. Their love should signal a celebration of difference, the triumph of love over prejudice and intolerance. Instead it is destroyed by jealousy.
Shakespeare shines a fierce spotlight on the jealous heart and on our attitudes towards the outsider. A story of its time and for our time, full of terror and beauty, Othello is urgent, gripping, radical and beautiful.
Reviews:
"Among the supporting cast, Natalia Tena's Desdemona was a stand-out, and responsible for the two best scenes in the production. This was an exceptionally strong and sexual Desdemona, even (though rather unnecessarily) appearing half-naked in a linking scene with Othello as the two went to bed, and she exerted a great deal of playful control over him. She also, in perhaps the best killing-of-Desdemona I've ever seen, fought back(!), brandishing a smashed bottle at Othello as he chased her with a whip. "- The Bardathon Blog
"The other characters are clear-cut and engaging also, with Natalia Tena bringing out all the strength and character possible with the difficult part of the nauseatingly perfect Desdemona."- Whats On Stage
